We all know food is something that brings everyone together, I've narrowed down my wide interests in food, and combined them with my interests in small-batch, hand crafted goods, packaging design, and my on-going love for spot on gift giving. The result is this business, that I call Bites! Artful Food Baskets & Pantry. I sell gift baskets (well, kraft boxes actually - no wicker or cellophane here, I'm afraid) and pantry items. You can purchase a basket, a selection of pantry items, or both. My job is to scour the artisan food community to find interesting products that are new to you. What's my criteria for selecting said products? First and foremost, it needs to be good, and by good I mean delicious. It's also just as important that it be made by a small producer doing small-batch and handmade goods. That usually goes hand in hand with my third criteria, that you can't find the products in too many places. I've got a few products that aren't sold anywhere in Toronto, and a few not even in Ontario. The ingredients are another factor, and I've been trying to find as many all natural or organic products as possible. The last thing is appearance. After all, it is a gift, and I think it matters. These small producers often have the most charming of package designs. My aim is to have products that fit into as many of these factors as possible. A note on the local food movement. As I'm sure you're aware, local is huge right now, and I'm just as happy as the next guy to sell you products made close to home. In fact, I have a Local Foods Toronto basket, as well as a Canadian made basket. I also think it's magical to receive something from a faraway place. I mean, isn't that why we bring people back souvenirs from our trips? So do expect to find several Toronto made goods, as well as products from some other interesting food places, including Brooklyn, Montreal, California, and B.C. among others.
